Who are we? Who are you? Are we like minded or not? Does it really matter?
Yes, no and maybe. It’s really up to you, choose for yourself.
The quote in the title of this blog is from Oscar Wilde, the famous Irish writer. Oscar Wilde was heavily involved in the rising philosophy of aestheticism or simply put, 'Art for Art's sake'. Art from this movement focused on the simple and beautiful rather than having a deeper meaning. This quote is simple and beautiful and its meaning is as unpretentious as it reads. Read it again and let it sink in.
Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.
Individuality, uniqueness and pride in oneself is a powerful thing, sometimes a difficult thing too, especially in today’s over obsessive world. But when embraced, it can empower and set one a path of acceptance, courage and action, and all for the better.
That’s who we are; we are not here to conform to social norms just because someone else makes them so. We choose them if they resonate with us as individuals, if they fit our personality. We don’t follow any particular mad or crazy fashion styles in particular but we are also able to step out on our own to choose something different just because we like it. And it can be very different and out there. We see options that others don’t whether they’re a little crazy or completely unobvious. But we can also choose the simple option too, because when it works, it works.
There is something special about enjoying the freedom of choice and being inspired by this. We don’t necessarily want to change the world in any major or significant way yet sometimes we feel like we can if we want. And maybe we can. We want to support and enhance it in simple and subtle ways, almost under the radar and unnoticeable, but still making a difference that matters.
Choice and options are what makes the world go round, and having the power, confidence and willingness to choose the ones that matter to us is what makes us who we are.
After all, we are all unique and why be somebody else when we can be ourselves.
Can you remember who you were, before the world told you who you should be?
I think I remember. Either way, I definitely know who I am now and it’s exactly the person I want to be.
This is us, this is Toc.
